How do Gate Valves Work?

A gate valve is a type of isolation valve that is commonly used to control the flow of fluids in an industrial or agricultural system. Its simple design and mechanics make it one of the most commonly used valves across a wide range of industries. 

A gate valve is used to isolate media in a line by closing off the line. The valve operates by simply moving or lifting a flat or wedge-shaped “gate” inside the valve to block or release the flow of the fluid. They are ideal for isolating sections of the system for maintenance or repairs but are not designed for precise flow regulation.

Gate valves are generally operated by manual rotation of a hand wheel, but they can also be controlled by electric or hydraulic actuators.  They are available in a range of materials including cast iron and steel, as well as resilient seated (soft seat) or metal seated variants.

It’s worth noting that gate valves are not suitable for throttling. They are not designed to be partially open to control flow as this can cause vibration and damage the gate.
